The health benefits of fragrance

The fragrance of Rosemary has been shown to enhance memory

The fragrance of Rosemary enhances memory.

Aromatherapy came about when a French chemist, Rene-Maurice Gattefosse seriously burned himself one day while working in his lab. Gattefosse thrust his burnt hand and arm into a container of pure lavender oil and gained almost instant relief. For this reason, lavender oil should be part of every first-aid kit for the immediate treatment of burns.

But not only that, in the days that followed, his hand did not present with all the normal signs of a serious burn and his arm healed remarkably quickly leaving no scaring. Gattefosse was so intrigued by this he dedicated the rest of his life to what be named “Aromatherapy”.

But long before had it benefits been scientifically identified, the Egyptians, the people of early India, the Chinese, the Greeks and Romans all used essential oils for health and well being and this use dates back to 5000 B.C.

The Egyptians used essential oils to embalm people of great importance. The people of early India built entire temples of sandalwood to ensure an aromatic atmosphere at all times. The ancient Greeks and Romans had much consideration for Aromatics. Hippocrates, the father of medicine said “The way to health is to have an aromatic bath and scented massage every day.”

Aromatherapy has a lot to offer

Essential oils are antiseptic and anti viral, I have seen serious burns heal completely with the use of lavender oil. The use of rosemary was proved for a BBC documentary to improve memory and its use is widespread, especially within the massage industry.

But it has always been popular, in the Victorian era, fragrances were used to mask many unpleasant odours and we have a natural predisposition to fragrances that gave rise to the perfume industry.

Aromatherapy works on two levels, the psychological aspect of the mind and the physical aspects of the body. It works particularly well as a prophylactic measure but is an extremely effective form of treatment for most illnesses, be it schizophrenia, to balding and heart disease.

As a science and an art, Aromatherapy is the application of essential oils to open the body to healing through stimulating its senses. The most effective ways to use essential oils are through external application, lotions, body oils etc or through inhalation, tissue, steamed bath or oil burner etc.

Essential oils represent the soul of the plant they are extracted from and they are the most concentrated form of herbal energy.

Perhaps the most intriguing evidence of Aromatherapy at work is the comments of Aura Readers who have seen the benefits of essential oils in action.

The concept of the aura is not a new age phenomenon, and most people have some idea of what it is. A brief definition describes the human aura to be a living field of colourful energy that is suspended in layers around the human body. It really acts as an advertisement of a person and their energy.

Some people are gifted enough to the see the Aura with the naked eye while science has developed cameras to photograph the Auric image.

People who work with Auric Interpretation and Medical Diagnosis agree that Aromatherapy has a notable effect on a persons Auric Field, there comments suggest that Aromatherapy has true benefits in the treatment of health and general well being.
