A root cause of human suffering

Colonialism is the process by which capitalists acquire new wealth, new possessions and inflict suffering on those they discern as being 'other' than themselves. The 'sense' attributed to colonialism is that colonialists are driven by irrational fear and greed to possess the entire world's resources and control humanity.

The human failings that drive people to war and conflict all stem from the general ignorance of the population but mostly from the greed of the capitalists. And we know because we get to study a little history that it has been primarily the Europeans who have inflicted the most suffering on the world although we should not forget that there have been empire builders (colonialists) on every continent seeking to possess and control.

The Ferengi Rules of Acquisition that in many ways best represent the capitalistic and colonialist mentalities could well have been taken from pages of numerous textbooks and the course content of any institution teaching economics and business studies which foster a 'winner take all' mentality.

In today's world it is somewhat painful to observe those with a conscience struggling to rein in bullying and aggressive behaviour because within the hearts of both colonialism and capitalism, bullying and aggression are core elements of competition. While many protest and call for a more just society, others attempt to stand up to the bullies/colonialists but since the world has been suffering economic and political tyranny for many thousands of years, it is a deep-seated aspect of our cultural inheritance.

Most of us learned about colonialism in school, and even though many hundreds of millions of people needlessly lost their lives so that the patriarchal capitalists could enjoy greater wealth, it was presented with the moral justification that it was in fact a good way to behave in those hundreds of millions of people who died were of little consequence. That idea of killing for profit and power is reinforced in most of our movies yet we don't seem to realise that we are being brainwashed.

It is my opinion that the patriarchal capitalists in order to create a more compliant workforce invented religions firstly to placate the spiritual need of the people and secondly to act as a militaristic force to acquire new land and resources, and to decimate populations. The Christians and the Islamist's proved to be most brutal at this and even in this modern world, mass killing in the name of belief although socially reprehensible is politically acceptable as we have seen in the recent takeover of Afghanistan.

Is there a solution?

There is no doubt that within our current sociopolitical environment we must continue to press for sanity and an awakening to our true human nature. Those more enlightened must keep pressing for educational and political reforms. Educational to root out the actual teaching of patriarchal capitalist and colonial concepts and political calling for our political leadership to actually do their duty and serve the real needs of the people rather than their corporate masters.

At this point in time human civilisation has become interconnected to the extent that very few people are out of touch with the basic thrust of civilisation. Many would like to remain hidden or hideaway but there are so many of us that is no longer an option, we are all being compelled to participate. By instituting continuing to manipulate a free market economy in addition to the world's loosely democratic political systems, we are all being controlled.

We can't opt out, but by understanding the nature of economic and political controls we can in theory by using our intelligence make a very small difference. Inasmuch as we have access to land and resources, we can become more self-sufficient. Regardless of where or how we live, we can meditate and practice yoga. Yoga and meditation of the two primary tools which will not only keep us physically healthier but they will give us mental clarity and sharper perception.

Very few of us are activists yet although being politically divided, we are all able to vote and choose where to spend our money.
