Essential protein and primary nutrition

Without getting to deep into the word meanings, lets simply use this definition; a nut is the seed of any fruit and a seed is an embryonic plant enclosed in a covering called the seed coat or husk, usually with some stored food. In other words, nuts and seeds carry the fertilised genetic information and nutrition necessary to grow into another plant of its own species.

Seeds include also include grains and they all supply a broad spectrum of essential nutrients necessary for our health and well being. In general, seeds such as wheat provide more carbohydrates whereas beans and nuts provide a higher ratio of protein.

General classifications:

  1. Beans (also known as legumes or pulses) are protein-rich seeds.
  2. Grains are from grass-like crops that are harvested and often ground to make flour. They are divided into cereals and Pseudocereals.
  3. Nuts are botanically a specific type of fruit but the term is also applied to many edible seeds that are not botanically nuts.
  4. Gymnosperms produce nut-like seeds but neither flowers nor fruits.

Beans include:

Lentils or vigna, peanuts and bambara (groundnut), black eyed pea, common garden beans including scarlet runners and broad beans, Chickpeas, Cowpeas, Black eyed pea, Hyacinth bean, lupins, peas, pigeon peas, soya beans and peanuts or groundnuts.

Although some beans can be consumed raw, many need to be cooked before consumption.

Grains (cereals) include:

Barley, Maize (corn), Millet, Oats, Rye, Sorghum, Spelt, Teff, Triticale, Wheat and Rice.

Proper nuts:

These include all our favourites; almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts etc that grow on trees.

Pseudocereals include:

Acacia seed, buckwheat, cattail, chia, flax, amaranth, kinwa, pitseed and goosefoot.

Gymnosperms:

These are a group of seed-producing plants that includes conifers, cycads, Ginkgo, and Gnetales. Pine nuts are a popular Gymnosperm.
