India's Dowry Problem

And the origins of India’s dowry system

The modern use of the word word ‘dowry’ refers to the durable goods, cash, real or movable property, a transfer of parental property, gifts or money given at the marriage of a daughter. The older more traditional meaning and use was that this was a gift to the bride as her exclusive property.

In India due to British manipulation of Hindu Law, it became the price paid by the bride’s family to the bridegroom, his parents and even relatives as a condition of the marriage. It is prevalent in many countries but in India it is more obvious and causes great social harm.

The current British devised dowry system

Hinduism and Economic Development in India

A conflict of knowledge and wilfulness

A discussion on a paper by by A.K. Saran:

If we look at the evolution of economic development in India over the past millennia, some may say it is playing catch up to the west and as of 2019, it is not only catching up but taking over. This is providing positive outcomes for some and further impoverishing others because that’s the nature of capitalism.

When we look at the Hindu political and economic sphere today, it seems to be operating an accord to an extract from the article ‘Hinduism and Ă©conomic Development in India‘ by A.K. Saran who says: “The sociological problem of India’s economic development is

Meet the Romans

Playboys get themselves an empire

With her ability to read between the lines and sense of realism, Mary Beard makes history interesting. She describes the legend of Romulus and Remus and its relevance to the development Rome, a city and state founded on bloodshed. Perhaps in no other time has human brutality ever been eclipsed yet the model of governance espoused by Augustus rules the world today.

Mary describes Rome as a city that takes what it wants and gives very little in return although in the modern era we tend to think that we got our language from Latin, good roads and an education system. But the Romans had no altruistic ideas, medicine was developed to serve the army

Abeera's Short Life

The tragedy of living as an Islamic woman

Abeera’s story reflects the ‘new typical’ for a girl living under Islam. Yet even though her short life was tragic, she knew life and never yielded to blind belief. Most of the world has become familiar with the way that Islamic societies treat their women and the voices of the Mullah’s in Saudi and other Islamic countries claim that women are not humans, but animals to be owned and traded.

Most people have also heard of honour killings and the fact that Muslims are not very big on education. The Islamic scholars protest that if the information is not written into the Koran, the Hadith or the Sira, then it’s not worth

Caste and Colonialism

Dividing, conquering and creating wealth based class divides

The Europeans evolved to be materialists, bodies and minds with little concept of a soul. There societal values were and still are all about acquisition at any cost. They enshrined divisions between rich and poor in law and there were no laws against plundering, stealing killing and even extermination of those of a different class or culture.

We can see this continuing today and this power structure has its own evolution. It was the British East India company that was most influential across East Asia and the Pacific while the Spanish dominated the Central and South Americas. The corporate bosses made social and military contracts with tribal leaders and often set

How Will the World End?

Many say the end is nigh

Doomsday forecasters and prophets like Nostradamus have forever been predicting the end of the world. The current end of days forecast was for December 2012, but that failed to happen yet extinction seems inevitable to many.

There are many theories about how life on Earth may end, they include being struck by an asteroid or comet, gamma-ray bursts from some far off dying sun, a shift in the Earth’s magnetic poles or global warming, a fire that most of us are adding fuel to.

We know that Earth has a finite life as does our entire solar system, but this life is counted in billions of years and it seems logical that if we

Liberals vs Conservatives

Relics of the past – Where do you sit?

via Sizzle

Our modern world has become so divisive in the terms liberal and conservative somewhat outdated because in the USA it’s a matter of Republican or Democrat, and a reflection of the developing tribal culture within the modern era as people try to establish their identities and get what they want from life.

However conservatives and liberals are dying breed’s and are being replaced by neoliberalism which is many times worse. In general conservatives embrace the conventional wisdom of the time accepting the status quo and support only a small incremental changes to keep their hand on the wheel of power.

Conversely liberals are

The Question of Truth

And that truth will set you free

As children growing up we are taught to speak the truth as we see it, yet we learn to see that truth is often a matter of perspective and in some situations where a number of people have witnessed the same event, their telling is different because they all saw from a different perspective, a major problem when the law is involved. So what is referred to as the truth today is a convenient concept that most of us can agree upon.

This most of us has come to distinguish between various truths in relation to what we choose to believe this. The Christians believe that there heavenly guard is real even though

The Bullying Phenomenon

An age old tribal practice that blossoms in the modern world

Bullying is nothing new, it’s been going on for millennia and we also see it in the animal kingdom stemming from primal survival instincts and those who bully others today operate not so much because they consciously decided this was their role, but because of the unique circumstances or karma governing their lives.

When two animals are hungry and there is one morsel of food, they will without the benefit of higher intelligence fight to the death and males traditionally compete for females in a similar manner. But us humans have been gifted with a higher intelligence, we can take a morsel of food and devise ways of
