Easy Foot Massage

Massage the feet but please don't tickle

Unless they are particularly ticklish most people enjoy having their feet massaged and this can also be an important component of a full body treatment. When they are ticklish, keep your strokes firmer and more deliberately non tickley.

It is generally thought that there are nerve endings in the feet relating to the entire body so a foot massage can be as therapeutic as a full body massage, sometimes more so. Remember that the whole point of massage is to have the person relax completely and it's not uncommon for people to go to sleep. If they do, complete the treatment.

Generally you do not need oil to massage the feet if you have previously massaged the front or back legs but if you do need some lubricant, use sparingly and is nothing worse after having a nice foot massage than to stand up and slip over because one's feet are to oily or put on shoes and socks, more so when the weather is cold.

In general feet are pretty tough so unless you have the deliberate intention to hurt someone or you are simply not paying attention to what you are doing, it's very hard to cause harm but still you must take care and if health or other reasons present themselves causing you to doubt about this treatment, don't.

Method

  1. With your friend having clean feet, sit with their foot you are about to  treat pointing directly towards your middle (navel) so that you are square on.
  2. Lift the foot and rest the heel in the palm of your hand
    • Can you gently flex the ankle?
    • Use your other hand to gently push up on the ball of the foot and then pull down toward you
    • Gently  twist the foot each way and here you are testing the range of movement but ensure  you keep the foot properly aligned.
  3. Pull/push the toes back, forward and open wide to gently stretch between them.
  4. Padding - like  cat into a sweater - work evenly and consistently down over the entire sole of the foot
  5. Use the point of a knuckle to press down the spinal reflex - from the joint on the big toe to the centre inside of the heel.
  6. Massage into the arch of the sole with your knuckles
  7. Massage down over the top of the foot  with the pads of your  thumbs
  8. Massage around the ankle and heel with fingertips
  9. A general effleurage to finishandmassagetheotherfoot.
    • Try out some of these moves on your own feet.
    • To do a complete foot treatment, begin with a warm foot bath and dry the feet before you begin. With a little attention to detail and as a novice, you may be able to spend 15 - 20 mins per foot without boring your friend though you may send them to sleep.
    • When you discover tender or sore spots, look up the foot charts to discover the reflexology relationship.
    • You may not have sufficient time to spend 5 mins on each foot, but feet need to be included however briefly for the body to feel complete.

To do a complete foot massage as a stand alone treatment, it's really nice begin with a warm foot bath and dry the feet before you begin. With a little attention to detail and as a novice, you may be able to spend 15 - 20 mins per foot without boring your friend though you may send them to sleep.

When you discover tender or sore spots, look up the foot charts to discover the reflexology relationship, you'll find some on youtube.

As part of a full body massage, the feet are only massaged for a few minutes. You can combine flexing and rubbing techniques as time allows, but try to be consistent.

This massage is done on a table, however it's as easily done sitting on the floor
