When we are young and stress free, our facial skin is smooth and wrinkle free provided we survive acne and other blemishes as we age. So here is what happens as we age and some simple remedies to maintain attractiveness.

Eye lines

These are part of the aging process, they are our smile lines and if we smile a lot, there's no avoiding them although a healthy diet and lifestyle will delay their appearance.

When we see the elderly with nicely defined smile lines, it's normal to feel warmth and sense of trust toward them.


The tell tale signs of age

But when we are young, it can be a sign of premature ageing.

Eye bags

These are another story, they often result from periods of prolonged tiredness and some say overwork with too little relaxation.  The people with eye bags a look like they've been up all night, but this is not always the cause, it can be a part of our ageing process but it's more often a result of stress factors.

Eye bags are also part of the aging process, during which the ligaments that hold the under-eye fatty deposits get weaker. With time, the skin loses its elasticity and the bags get bigger. And while the speed at which this happens is often hereditary, some lifestyle factors can hasten the process.

The dark colour of the eye bags and other smudges around the eyes are caused by tiny blood vessels showing through the thin skin that surrounds the eye.
When we are tired, this thin skin becomes even more translucent, making these blood vessels more obvious. The darkness of the eye bags depends on how thin and translucent our skin is and over the years, our skin becomes gradually thinner.

Common causes of eye bags:

  • A lack of sleep
  • Excess alcohol and drugs
  • Sinus / nasal congestion. When your nose is congested because from hay fever, flying or a cold, veins that drain from your eyes into your nose become widened (dilated) and darker

Social implications

People are often judge and criticise, and public figures like the Duchess of Cambridge are criticised for their bruise-like under-eye circles and puffy eye bags. But it’s not only all those famous people who suffer the curse of the dark under eye circles, it's estimated that two-thirds of women are so worn out that they are constantly tired and rely on sugar and caffeine to get by. An author, Dr Frank Lipman dubbed them ‘the spent generation’.

When we see our friends with eye bags, it's natural to assume they have been over working or partying to excess.

There is no easy solution to dealing with eye bags and those dark circles.  Worry leads to a cycle of disrupted sleeping, the evidence of which is stamped clearly in the form of dark smudges, puffiness around the eyes or, if you are unlucky, both.

Tips to avoid eye bags:

  • Adequate diet and lifestyle
  • Sleep With Your Head Elevated – When you sleep, fluid can accumulate under the eyes and contribute to eye bags and puffiness. Sleeping on your back and with your head on two pillows elevates your face while you rest and reduces fluid accumulation under the eyes.
  • Avoid Fluids Before Bedtime – Speaking of sleep, try not to drink fluids before you retire for the evening. With less fluid in your system while you rest there's less fluid to build up and cause puffiness.
  • Avoid Salty Snacks – Foods that are high in salt can increase water retention, and the effect is magnified while you rest, when your metabolism slows to a crawl.
  • Drink Plenty of Water (During the Day) – This sounds ironic considering we just discussed how water retention can cause eye bags, but the name of the game here is to drink it during the day. Your body needs water to flush out toxins and keep skin taut and healthy.
  • Green Tea Bags – One of the famous old wives tales you've heard, cold green tea bags can, in fact, reduce eye bags. Chalk it up to an anti-inflammatory chemical called EGCG, which can reduce fluid accumulation and tighten the delicate skin in this area. Not into green tea? Use a slice of cucumber instead.
  • Gently massage your face twice daily and use a nice and natural moisturising oil such as coconut or rosehip.

While some people will continue to look like zombies, you have an opportunity to resolve your own by following the tips above.
