Learning massage

Bringing out the healer in you

thumbsAs massage is instinctive, everyone has some basic talent to begin with including hands to touch and a level of sensitivity. But training provides greater context and methodology; this is the why, when and how to achieve specific results.

If you are contemplating learning massage to be of service to others, options are to: have some massages yourself from different therapists to discover what benefits you or what you like the most, and you can talk to therapists about their training and experience. They may give you references.

For many, the idea of learning massage is a romantic idea but it's not, massage calls for a grounding in reality and setting aside any prudishness or judgemental attitude towards people and their bodies.

Some of the best massage schools require that all students are completely naked during class time. In this setting, it does not matter who is a man or a woman, it is all about learning the art of how to touch another human being and the science of the human body. Anyone who is performing massage needs to be transparent because any prudishness, any judgements and phobias will be transmitted to the people they massage and therefore turning massage into a fetish.

Once you have an idea of what style of massage you want to learn, it is simply a matter of enrolling in an institution and completing the program.  If you live far from any teaching institution, you can learn from books and videos but most institutions offer a range of courses:

Recreational massage

Learn to massage your friends and family - such a course will cover basic health and safety, and competency to perform a range of massage techniques to give a relaxing massage with 2 - 10 hours tuition or you can learn from books and videos.

Our website now contains a simple guide to massaging on the bed or floor or massage on the table. The instructions along with images and videos are somewhat easier to follow than many textbooks and of course you can have the videos playing as you practice although oil and technology do not mix very well.

Professional massage

Professional training varies widely. There are diploma courses which can be completed in 10 hours. Such a course is elementary and provides basic massage skills, however it can be sufficient to provide a 'foot in the door' and a start in the industry. Ongoing study will be required to achieve a professional status.

By Contrast some courses take up to five years and cost many thousands of dollars. In such a course, one would expect very high academic standards including learning anatomy, physiology and pathology to the level of a medical doctor as well as mastering the hands on application of the massage techniques. With these skills a practitioner should be able to assist clients overcome serious medical problems and work in with multi disciplinary teams.
