Oh McCain's

McCain Foods (Aust) Pty Ltd

mccain2The originally Canadian company McCain's processes and sells frozen foods in Australasia and they have the motto, "oh McCain's, you've done it again" implying that they've done something really wonderful. In terms of frozen vegetables this company is pretty much a household name so the other day I bought a packet of their frozen vegetables.

The supermarket chiller is full of many brands and because it was a familiar brand, I selected a bag of McCain's frozen greens. My gaze didn't take me much beyond the title, after all, veggies are veggies and later after preparing a meal, we sat down to eat. But the taste of McCain's mixed vegetables proved to be so incredibly sweet and sickly, we had to throw out that portion of the meal.

mccain1There was some complaining and a few days later as we still had some of the packet left, we gave another portion of the vegetables a thorough wash under cold water. But even after that, what should have been pleasant tasting vegetables turned into another over-sweet disappointment and the remainder of the packet thrown in the bin.

Perhaps they got the idea of sweetening their products to make them more appetising to children, but really products like this are just going to make people sick.

When it comes to sugar, dietitians and nutritionists have established that 4 grams of white sugar (granulated) is equal to 1 teaspoon of sugar and that:

  • Men should not consume more than 9 teaspoons or 36 grams of sugar per day.
  • Women should not take more than 5- 6 teaspoons or 20 grams of sugar per day.
  • Children should not have more than 3 teaspoons of sugar or 12 grams per day.

From the standpoint of natural health professionals who are not in cahoots with the sugar industry, we don't need any added sugar in our diet because we get our sugar from the breakdown of carbohydrates.

But when you read the label and see that there are actually 8.8 g of carbohydrate +4 g of sugar, that equates to 12.8 g of sugar which makes this a very unhealthy product.

All I could say to McCain's is that they should stick to selling vegetables and not adding sugar. So when you're out shopping for groceries, it pays to read the labels because like me, you might end up throwing your money in the bin. Needless to say it's unlikely I'll buy their products again and take time to read the labels.

McCains replied:

McCain Foods do not add anything to our vegetables.  Once harvested they are simply washed in water and snap frozen.  The information on the nutritional panel (including carbohydrates and sugars) are naturally occurring in the vegetables.

So; we replied to Kim with images of the packaging and our email was returned as McCains have blacklisted our IP number blocking any further email communication.

It's clear that McCain's is not interested in this conversation but please feel free to share the hell out of it.

Hi, it’s true. I had the same problem and they didn’t want to know

Hi, you are correct. I carry a magnifying glass to the supermarket so I can read the labels and several of McCain’s products contain added sugar. I tried calling them but no one answered the phone so like you, I wrote to them and got a stock reply that there is no added sugar any of their products, a lie that I just can’t believe and I tried to reply but they’d blocked my email so they’re really crooks
