Why Can't I sleep?

asleepThere are many reasons that we have difficulty sleeping and a lack of sleep over time causes the body and mind to become less able and more susceptible to physical and mental illness.  But sleep deprivation is a cause of suffering.

How much sleep do we need?

Babies can sleep over 12 hours per day, but by the time we reach 60 years of age, many get by happily with 3 or 4 hours per night. There is no hard and fast rule, but most adults get by with 6-8 hours per night. Those who don't need as much sleep have more time to do the things they enjoy.

What keeps as awake?

Factors like noise, temperature, an over active mind and problems that need resolved all affect one's ability to fall asleep and get sufficient rest.

Ways to get some sleep:

  • Can't get to sleep because of worries and the mind is busy?
    You cannot banish thoughts, this requires that you make peace with the world and especially within your relationships. If your unhappy with your boss, your children, parents, spouse or anyone, those issues need to be resolved to allow a peaceful sleep.

    Moderate to strenuous physical exercise is one of the most well proven ways to ensure a good nights sleep. Exercise shifts the one's focus from the mind to the body providing relief from anxiety or worry.  So get some activity in your day and sex before sleep is often one of the most potent sedatives.When the body is physically in need of rest, the mind becomes subservient and cannot stand in the way of sleep.

  • Too hot?
    If you are to cold, generally you'll wake, but when to hot, one wakes with a headache or just feels like sleep has been insufficient or in effective.  When the ambient temperature is above 20 degrees C, one sheet or a light blanket is often enough to keep restfully warm.Most people really know if they are too cold and another blanket usually solves the problem.
  • Can't stop wriggling?
    Aside from being annoying to self and partner, it disrupts temperature awareness and keeps the bed unreasonably cool. When sleep finally arrives, the body can overheat which reduces sleep quality. So some self discipline to not wriggle which is also helped by being physically tired.
  • Drugs.
    The last resort as sleeping pills have side effects and are addictive. When all else fails and we recommend the herbal alternative.
