History and Collapse of the Roman Empire

Empires are unsustainable

It was only a short time ago in evolutionary terms that Rome was simply a small city-state with no more significance than any other state in the region. Perhaps it happened that traders from India, Persia, Greece and North Africa passed through Rome seeded new ideas that some early Romans turned their minds to trade, usery and the accumulation of power? But its is clear they borrowed heavily from the Greeks in developing a hierarchical social structure, military techniques, arts and culture.

As Rome’s power grew, it absorbed neighbouring states until it controlled the entire Mediterranean region making it as most history books tell us was the world’s greatest empire.

This is not exactly true, long

Seeking Heaven - Seeking Pleasure

Reward for service or escapism

Sometimes we wish life could be more heavenly. but what is heaven and where do we find it? Across the Middle East during a time of growing desertification, Heaven was most often described as an idyllic paradise with lush gardens, an abundance of food and no responsibility, all one’s needs are taken care of.

If we look at the temple Art from north-west India across North Africa, it depicts this idyllic heaven as something akin to the mythical hanging Gardens of Babylon. So perhaps we can say that this was in response to harsh living conditions and indeed those with means either created their own miniature paradise or spread and conquered other lands.

Slavery in Arab Countries

About half of the Saudi workforce are migrant workers

If you pay attention to the news media, you will often come across stories relating to the abuse and mistreatment of migrant workers in Islamic countries. In Saudi Arabia for instance, almost one half of the entire workforce is made up of foreign labourers and some them are treated worse than slaves.

Most often the company organising workers on behalf of individuals or companies will retain the individual’s passport and documents which means that even in the country in which they work, they have no freedom.

Most of the men that go into these countries work in construction. They come to Saudi because there is not the work in their

The Karma of Technology

Will we pay a price for our pleasure and conveniences?

In most families, children are taught and encouraged to do their share to help maintain families and communities. This is natural and they can take pride in their contribution. But in the situation that has become more prevalent in the modern world is that children are being forced into lives of hard labour to help maintain adults who should know better in lives of privilege.

This is one of the darker sides of capitalism where in the case of mining, minerals are taken/stolen from the earth and much of the labour is performed by children were often paid so little that they remain perpetually malnourished and are constantly abused.

A History of Slavery

The foundation of capitalism

Deash are thought to have abducted over 25,000 women (including young girls) & forced them into sex slavery. Some have been ‘claimed’ by fighters while others have been sold in markets since 2012.

The fact of life that we overlook is that in order for the modern world to exist and even for it to have come into existence, there must have been and there must always be someone to do the hard work.

No one really knows when slavery began and there are various forms of slavery which may have arisen with the hunter who was injured and unable to continue the hunt who probably become someone’s servant. But slaves range from those people

Remaining Sane in an Insane World

A guide for survival

We face so many challenges today, it’s simply mind-boggling to try and find any perspective. Everyone has a different opinion about what’s going on in life, especially politics, crime, poverty and what is about Muslims?

We know that life is finite and there is almost nothing that any ordinary individual can do or say that’s going to have any positive effect on the state of the world. Therefore the majority of people except that life is fate and we simply have to do the best we can to be the type of person we want to be.

Another word for fate is karma meaning ‘as you sow, so shall you reap’. The Western use of

Obesity

A Life imbalance

Over the past 100 years, obesity in the developed world has become a disease. The sedentary lifestyle, combined with an excess of refined foods is leading to a quarter of the population having to compromise their lives due to the effects of excess weight and they fall risk to diabetes and other dietary related problems.

The dieting industry has a high failure rate and diet alone seldom works. What does work is a fundamental change in life style which includes dietary changes. Diet programs regularly fail and people try many different and often expensive programs without any significant results.

So why do some people get fat while others don’t?
