Politicking

And why things are the way they are

Most of us are familiar with ideas like politicians are the most untrustworthy species and that our world is in a mess due to their incompetence. But to understand why the world is the way it is and the failure of your political systems, we need to step back and summarise the evolutionary process that brought us to this point.

It’s fairly well known that we evolved from hunter gatherer tribes where sometimes one person was the leader and sometimes decision-making was more democratic. There is no one fits all description but things changed more quickly with the advent of agriculture and perhaps more importantly, the use of money and the development

The Great Game

And the failure we call civilisation

Consider for a moment the larger scale of existence, in terms of the universe we are insignificant specks of life in some far off corner of some remote galaxy, yet we take ourselves incredibly seriously. When it comes to life in our local environment, we give ourselves rights and privileges, and sometimes these rights and privileges are inclusive of others but are all too often exclusive.

There have been times when civilisations have been inclusive giving rise to a sense of heaven on earth, but more often than not, individuals and communities have been exclusive giving rise to conflict and suffering. When we existed as small tribal groups and the human population of the

The Real Truth

The Philippines stands up to the world

The USA has dominated the world for the past 60 or so years, it’s economic, military and social policies have been forced on most nations and often at the point of a gun. The Philippines is no exception, US troops evicted the Spanish over 100 years ago giving the Filipinos hope of independence. But the Americans refused to go away until their political policies had become entrenched.

Up until World War II, the Philippines was a very inconspicuous nation easily overrun by the Japanese who again were evicted by the Americans and Filipino militias. When the war was over the Americans turned the Pacific back to the US’s ‘big backyard’ and of

A Merger from Hell

And a nail in the coffin of life on earth

The news over the past week carried the story of the agrochemical giant Bayer’s announcement that it’s impending merger with Monsanto, the most hated company on the planet.

These two companies joining into one mega-corporation is truly the stuff of nightmares. Together they would be the biggest seed company AND the biggest pesticide company in the world with control over almost everything we eat and grow. It would mean more bee-killing neonics in our fields, more toxic glyphosate in our food, and more corporate control over our food supply.

This is not yet a done deal as Bayer and Monsanto must get this merger past regulators in the U.S. and

Election 2016

Public disgrace as shit hits the fan

Remember them

We have had many years of American drama on our big and small screens, and in recent years real-life dramas have become popular and paved the way for a smooth transition into the real world politics and drama of the US elections.

In contrast we have had years of conspiracy theories and protesters crying out that the ‘king has no clothes’. The rich and powerful just laughed at the people and dismissed public concerns as they got on with playing politics and finance.

If we set this against the backdrop the past 120 years, all this political manoeuvring has resulted in a dozen wars and countless civil wars that

Alcohol

And the Tragedy of Western Civilisation

Alcohol has been a part of our civilisation for a very long time and it is generally thought that the discovery of alcohol was an accident because someone noticed that when grain is left in a wet state, fermentation occurs and alcohol is produced.

If we step back into antiquity, we know that bread and beer were currencies in some civilisations, but the alcohol content of the beer in ancient times was extremely low and it was virtually impossible to get drunk.

However over the last 10,000 years, the development of agriculture and the growth of civilisation began to give people leisure time in which they were free to experiment with different aspects
