Caring for Your DNA

The core of our creation

We have an old saying “if you don’t use it, you lose it.” This phrase is most usually applied to our level of fitness and strength which is declining due to all our modern conveniences and modern lifestyle.

There is growing evidence that our genetics and our DNA is influenced and can even be changed by our lifestyle, our way of thinking, our way of eating and our activities. We know that if we overeat and don’t exercise, typically would become fat and weak. We know that if we eat all the wrong foods, these can also contribute to weight gain and can weaken us at a biological level.

But when we as individuals become

Political Correctness

Artificial niceness

We’ve been hearing a lot about “PC Culture” from the conservative media and presidential candidates lately, and the consensus seems to be that all of this political correctness is stifling our right to freedom of speech. But when has speaking out against discrimination and hate ever stripped someone else of their ability to voice their opinion? You still have the freedom to say whatever you want, and the “PC Police” still have the right to tell you how wrong you are.

Political correctness is just a fancy term for not telling the truth and preventing others from being truthful. The term was originally used within the Communist Party in Stalin’s Russia to describe which opinions on

So What about Islam?

And your new Muslim neighbours

It seems the only constant is change then yet we crave peace and stability. As such, we build our lives under the loose guise of democracy and religion that is supposed to ensure a degree of justice and social equity.

In some corners of the world, people have found this peace and stability although it has often come price. Prices have included defeating Germany in World Wars 1 and II. some people have been fortunate enough to buy a small slice of paradise only to be evicted by change.

It seems unlikely that they can ever be any absolute peace and certainly no life without change because the environment we live in is constantly

The Politics of Survival

Ignorance is not bliss

Body language says all. Turkish president Erdogan dominating Barak Obama. However many think that Obama’s purposeful appeasement of Muslims was placing America at great risk

Everyone has an instinctive desire to live and to be happy. An extension of that desire to live is to have children and grandchildren, and for them to be happy, to have long lives and reproduce into a distant future.

Yet if we look at the world today, there is no future beyond the end of this century and the entire thrust of western civilisation is about living for today; or perhaps should I say consuming so much that all life on this planet will be Continue reading The Politics of Survival

Amaryllidaceae

To eat or not to eat Allium vegetables

Allium vegetables are loosely defined as members of the onion family and there are hundreds of species. They have been used as a food and medicine for thousands of years, and include; red and white onions that we are so familiar with as well as scallions or spring onions, shallots, leaks, garlic, chives and others.

All these allium vegetables are considered low in nutrients and are valued more for their taste. As such the use of these vegetables was very widespread. In recent years, these plants have become so heavily used across the Western world that it’s almost impossible to find any commercially prepared foods that don’t contain some allium vegetable flavouring.

The Cause of Suffering

Generations of ignorance

The Buddha taught that ignorance is the cause of suffering, so what did he mean by that?

We all know that the fire is hot and therefore we do not put our hands too close because we know that the fire will cause pain and physical damage. We know that if we drive our cars ridiculously, then we are likely to crash causing pain and suffering to one’s self and others.

Some of us learned from our parents and avoided putting our hands into the fire and therefore avoided that unpleasant suffering. Some of us however had to learn the hard way and experienced that pain – but we learned. Similarly some of us drove carefully and

Movements to Save the World

Responding to imminent disaster

Sadhguru

There are many movements there have gathered in response to the degradation of our environment and global conflict. They have many names such as the friends of the Earth, Greenpeace, the zeitgeist movement and many others. Their memberships are made up of people from all walks of life, but it seems fair to suggest that a majority may be atheistic in their outlook on life.

Earlier today I responded to a question on Facebook asking how we could save the world by returning to a ‘natural law resource based economy’.

This is a good idea because it would also mean abolishing credit in yet to put that into place, we would

Take off your shoes

Barefoot supports health

Spending time barefoot is actually a very healthy activity. Walking on the grass and feeling the sand between your toes helps to connect one’s body with the earth and massage the feet.

Some people have come to think that this is somewhat unhygienic yet up until a few hundred years ago, the majority of all people went barefoot and shoes were only invented for those who walked in thorny situations.

By walking barefoot upon the earth, the body is reminded of its roots because our physical body is actually made from the stuff of the earth and a whole lot of water. Approximately 70% of our bodies mass is made up of water and the remaining 30%

Surviving the Fall

Of civilisation

Civilisations with some exceptions characteristically take thousands of years to evolve, but then they literally vanish overnight. We can think of Persia, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece, Rome and even the Soviet Union.

These empires grew through inspired leadership and yet they fell because they were built on an unstable foundation. If we take Rome as an example, it ruled from England to Persia and as it began to fall apart the Emperor of the time instituted Christianity in a last-ditch effort to save the Empire.

The fall of these civilisations was no doubt assisted by natural disasters and climate change. We know that the people of the Nile Valley migrated there between 4000 and 6000 years ago as the

Why Do We Shout?

Communicating in anger

A Hindu saint who was visiting river Ganges to take a bath found a group of family members on the banks, shouting in anger at each other. He turned to his disciples, smiled and asked.

‘Why do people shout in anger shout at each other?’

Disciples thought for a while, one of them said, ‘Because we lose our calm, we shout.’

‘But, why should you shout when the other person is just next to you? You can as well tell him what you have to say in a soft manner.’ asked the saint

Disciples gave some other answers but none satisfied the other disciples.

Finally the saint explained,

“When two people are angry at each other, their
