South of the US border
The people of Latin America all speak Spanish or Portuguese so it’s anyone’s guess why the region is called Latin America? The Latin language belongs to ancient Rome and is the root language for modern Italian as well as Spanish, Portuguese, English, German, and a few others.
But perhaps Latin refers more to the temperament of the people which is outgoing, passionate and hospitable. Religiously, the majority are Catholic and they pay their tributes to the Vatican. This religious bond does not signify the meaning of Latin either, because other Catholic countries like the Philippines is not referred to as a Latin country although a predominant influence in the past has been Spanish.
