Opinion vary as always, but dementia is thought to be caused by gradual changes and damage in the brain is caused by a build-up of abnormal (amyloid beta) proteins in the brain which leads to a decline in a person’s mental, and sometimes physical abilities.

Much of the research on Alzheimer’s disease has focused on the amyloid beta protein which clumps together into sticky fibrils that form deposits in the brains of people with the disease. Australian researchers have come up with a sound frequency treatment that breaks up these plaques and is giving new hope to some dementia sufferers. However there is still no outcome of research into the cause.

Alzheimer’s is described as a progressive deterioration of mental function or a generalized degeneration of the brain that can occur in in middle or old age. It is the commonest cause of premature senility and is listed officially as America’s sixth leading cause of death, but that doesn’t take into account medical errors, drug misuse and environmental toxins of themselves may not be fatal, may in fact contribute to dementia.

Alzheimer’s is thought to be responsible for approximately 70% of all dementia cases, making it the most recognized trigger of dementia and a problem for + 36 million worldwide, but only 1-in-4 are diagnosed.
