The Nature of Suffering

And the Key to Happiness

In the modern world of today, billions of people are fearing coronavirus and many governments are acting to politicise the fear as much as acting to contain and hopefully exterminate the virus.

The nature of suffering is twofold:

1. The physical; as in suffering caused by physical incapacity, the common cold, coronavirus and accidental injuries that compromise our physical ability to act in the world. A great amount of effort is put into alleviating these physical sufferings by the use of various treatments within the realms of allopathic medicine.

While chemical medicine and surgical interventions take care of some of the physical aspects of human existence, these do little to alleviate the suffering caused by

What is The Soul?

And the nature of being human

Meditation by Alex Gray

For many people, this question is irrelevant to their lives as they have in a way made peace with their suffering and are content to live in relative darkness. In contrast, those who give thought and attention to this question find that they can transcend their suffering, identify themselves as being human and unlocking the mysteries of the universe.

Before plunging into an attempted definition let us remember that we live within a realm of existence whose boundaries are incalculable. We are dealing here with cosmology as well as metaphysics and like the universe itself, ideas that are so immensely huge few people attempt them.

Asking such a

Debt - The Root of Suffering

And a form of self inflicted harm

It seems that the in today’s known world, every country and most individuals are in debt. This debt is the root cause of human suffering because the debtor is always obliged to serve the needs and wants of the creditor which equates as slavery.

It is thought that money evolved over the past 10,000 years and according to historian Paul Johnson, the lending of “food or seed money” was commonplace in Middle Eastern civilizations as early as 5000 BC leading to the idea of debt. For instance, when one community (group A) or even a family suffers a drought and neighbours (group B) step in providing them with the means of survival

The Importance of Pleasure

A temporary release from suffering

Sharing pleasure

When we consider the nature of our lives, a great many of us are trapped in some kind of suffering as a result of external politics and conditions as well as problems we create for ourselves. Pleasure involves our senses of perception be it physical, mental or emotional with spiritual pleasure or ecstasy the highest emotion.

Suffering and unhappiness is not what we are designed for, it’s simply a consequence of a whole lot of stuff either real or unreal. The baseline for human well-being is peace from which happiness, joy, bliss and ecstasy can flower.

However when people are suffering, pleasure offers a temporary respite and yet it has also

Exposing the breasts

For women that is..

As campaigns like free the nipple gather momentum and other campaigns for social equity and the right for both women and men to be able to go topless in public, what is the problem with breasts?

The real problem is religion and the idea that the human body is somehow sinful. This is a moral overlay on humanity. In the animal kingdom, there is no discrimination between breasts and the nose or the penis and the tail.

With the advent of Christianity which was designed for population control under the pretext of spiritual freedom, the new Christians could not accept the human body as it was. They had to put it down and decided that Continue reading Exposing the breasts

Entrapment

And the nature of suffering

Most people at some stage in their lives, and more so if they fall into the middle and lower socio economic classes in Western society will disparage their life and experience of time passing. How often have you heard someone say that they hate their life or that they can’t wait for it to be over?

There are many reasons to take on such an attitude. When we are very young, adults tend to act very nonsensical and as such child’s minds are filled with trivia until such time as they can make sense of their world. There is a time and place to go “goo goo gaga” but very often parents do not know

Why Meditation?

A foundational practise

Most people understand that activities go better with some planning and while some things that occur spontaneously can be brilliant, some can go horribly wrong. Meditation grounds us in a reality that leads to a harmonious life and success.

Whatever we do, we want to be successful but sometimes the best planning and our most sincere actions don’t always result in success. But if we look at some of the people who meditate, they range from executives within the world’s most successful companies to ordinary people who want to achieve the best out of life.

Many meditators say that meditation is actually instinctive and this is borne out by the fact that usually before we commence any

Yoga for Healing

Celebrated as a gift of life

There is no knowing when yoga really began, but there is a solid history going back 15,000 years showing how the nature of teachings have changed, yet the essence remains the same. It is the technology of being human that evolved into Dharma and shaped what is referred to as Hinduism.

No one really knows about the people who lived before then let alone what they thought and how they lived, but what is clear is that yoga began either in India as we know it today or in very close proximity, and we must remember that India’s borders have shrunk. 200 years ago Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and part of

Rape Culture

A sex crime and a loss of humanity

A 2010 jeans commercial giving boys wrong ideas that girls are their toys

The Cause of Suffering

Generations of ignorance

The Buddha taught that ignorance is the cause of suffering, so what did he mean by that?

We all know that the fire is hot and therefore we do not put our hands too close because we know that the fire will cause pain and physical damage. We know that if we drive our cars ridiculously, then we are likely to crash causing pain and suffering to one’s self and others.

Some of us learned from our parents and avoided putting our hands into the fire and therefore avoided that unpleasant suffering. Some of us however had to learn the hard way and experienced that pain – but we learned. Similarly some of us drove carefully and
