The Case for Vegetarianism

A solution to many current health problems

calfIdeas about what we should eat have been circulating since time immemorial, but by and large what we have eaten in the past has been purely based on individual needs for survival. There was a time when there were plenty of game animals and then we moved on to farming.

Economics came to play a role in what we ate, in many countries those who were poor ate what they could grow or gather, and those who were more affluent ate meat. In some ways this scenario is little changed because meat has become such an expensive commodity.

During the period of rapid cultural shift post World War II, millions of people became vegetarians and some became completely vegan which caused consternation in the meat-eating population and amongst meat producers. Modern dietary (scientific) experts proclaimed that meat was an essential part of our diet and without it, we would suffer.

While the modern scientific view still continues to dominate in many societies, there are actually societies around the world that have been vegetarian for many thousands of years, and they are actually healthier than meat eaters. Therefore the argument that eating meat is necessary for human survival is a modern myth born out of generations of cultural habits and cultural appropriation by the meat industry.

As people around the world become more aware of the facts as well as the suffering caused to animals, many people are becoming vegetarian despite the strong opposition by the agricultural sector that produces meat, the economic system that has helped to evolve the factory system of farming and a medical (dietary) system that is largely ignorant of true dietary values and the relationship of food to health.

The concept of killing

It is the nature of our existence that we must consume food in order to live and like us, the only available foods are other things that are alive. Therefore to eat, we must kill and take the substance of other lives into our own.

If we consider the biblical passages "thou shalt not kill" and "love thy neighbour", we think of these terms in reference to other people and that breaking these commandments amounts to a sin or a crime. So when it comes to killing and taking life to sustain our own, surely we must choose the lesser evil?

Although we kill plants by eating them, we have developed a symbiotic relationship that has enabled many parts species to flourish way beyond what they would ever have done by natural means. By utilising plants as food, we actually ensure their proliferation and survival.

The chemistry of meat

Speculation about the negative health effects of consuming meat have been circulating for years. There is a very long list of potential health problems that are associated with the consumption of meat derived from stressed animals, but the greater and proven risk is that there are so many chemicals used in agriculture including antibiotics, pesticides, herbicides, growth hormones and chemical fertilisers which negatively affect our health.


Animals are intelligent, they have feelings and memories, they can even empathise just like us

Stress, fear and pain when animals are being slaughtered or waiting to be slaughtered results in several disease processes in the humans which eat the meat. Most notable are cardiac problems, impotency and general fatigue but less well researched are the consequences like aggression and stupidity that plague the world. These adverse effects are most directly associated with consumption of dog meat. Experiments including laboratory dogs slaughtered in stressful conditions result in impotence of rats fed with the dog's meat. These results correlate with studies of humans in St. Georges, Utah.Studies made of domestic farm animals (cattle, pigs and poultry), and of laboratory animals (dogs and rats) show in all cases elevated levels of steroid hormones, generally associated with adrenocortical secretions. Primary substances include adrenalin, cortisone-like secretions, and steroids which stimulate fear pheromone production. All of these are known to result in poor health and poor vitality. This study confirms this link in food consumed by humans.

The Journal of Animal Science and researchers at the University of Milan's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine recently confirmed that fear experienced during slaughter significantly elevates meat's levels of stress hormones—adrenaline, cortisol, and other steroids.

The major health conditions cited by recent studies are conditions that affect the heart. Heart disease is believed to be associated with the consumption of any red meat, regardless of the presence of stress hormones. When you introduce stress hormones and poor quality meat into the equation, you are amplifying the negative effects on the heart.

Halal slaughter

Because the halal method of killing animals as food is often slow and cruel, the animal's body is flooded with distress hormones which in turn affects the body chemistry and consequently the consciousness of those who eat such meat. So really, they are feeding their own sickness.

Humanities current crisis

The world is over populated by humans, a species that has no knowledge of its origins or purpose and is unable to live harmoniously between themselves or even with the planet they rely on for life. If we keep on reproducing at our current rate and if we wish to maintain our current lifestyle, in 50 years we will at least need another planet to provide the resources to meet our needs.

By 2050 we will be 9 billion people, yet we are removing forest cover from an area the size of New York City almost on a daily basis. However trees are necessary because they supply us with the oxygen we need to breathe and at the rate we're going, and in 50 years time we will have much less oxygen in our atmosphere which will no doubt cause many people a great deal of suffering through increased respiratory problems.

To feed 9 billion people on a meat-based diet, we will have to cut down most of the remaining forests in order to produce enough meat to sustain the population, but if we all became vegetarian, we could reduce our current agricultural land area by as much as one half and still feed the entire world population.

By reducing our agricultural land area, we could plant more trees which would soak up more carbon dioxide and release oxygen back into our atmosphere. Without the reliance on animals as food, there will be no need to use as many agricultural chemicals which are already having a drastic effect on our health.

Meat undermines our health on many levels

The very fact of killing an animal produces a devaluation of life in those that do the killing and a subtle but unhealthy smugness in the population that consumes meat.

Then depending on the chemistry of the meat, as well as ingesting the protein that may take two or three days to digest, we also ingest all the chemicals in the meat. Scientists believe that adrenaline is broken down during digestion, but there are many other hormones, agricultural chemicals and veterinary medicine residues in the meat which are absorbed directly into the bodies of those who consume it.

One of modern medicines greatest concerns is the proliferation of superbugs, viruses and bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics. However antibiotics are widely used in the production and in many countries not even regulated.

Therefore every time we meet we also get micro doses of hormones and chemicals that can remain in our body systems for many years. These chemicals result in a very slow degeneration of physical and mental health resulting in poor judgement and hyper reactivity.

Vegetarianism is best

Extensive studies have been made on vegetarian communities and all those people generally live longer and experience greater levels of happiness than those with a meat-based diet.

As well as enabling humans to enjoy a healthier and happier life, a vegetarian diet will help to preserve life on earth.

Genetics and changes to our DNA

The Business Insider reports that vegetarians are very special as their DNA has the ability to take on new life enhancing characteristics.

"Scientists have learned that vegetarians have different genes which offers new evidence of ongoing human evolution. Locked away in the genes of vegetarians is a special type of mutation that was discovered by studying the genes of over 2500 people. The results showed that most people with this mutation had ancestors who have been living mostly of plants for hundreds of generations.


Ratios of vegetarian populations

This mutation enhances a human's ability to produce Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids which is great news for vegetarians as these fatty acids are important for brain function. But the best biologically available sources of Omega-3 and Omega-6 are animal products which is contrary to vegetarianism.

But don't think that you will develop this gene mutation in your lifetime, this is the miraculous result of hundreds of generations of vegetarianism the only way you'll get the mutation is if you already have it.

    Hi, I spent some time with some vegetarian folks and my body felt great but when I went back home I basically got ridiculed for talking about vegetarianism and it became a choice of choosing between a healthy diet and the people I know. Since I couldn’t really take up my job and life, I’ve gone back to eating meat
