The Statin Controversy

Lowering cholesterol or harming users?

A group of the most widely prescribed drugs of all time, Statins are a class of lipid-lowering medications that are claimed to inhibit production an enzyme that is thought to play a central role in the production of cholesterol. In other words, Statin drugs block the action of the liver enzyme HMG-CoA reductase.

We are constantly being told that too much cholesterol in the blood can cause a build-up of plaque on the walls of the arteries. That build-up can eventually cause the arteries to narrow, harden or even block blood flow altogether. As the arteries become restricted, blood clots in these narrowed arteries can cause a heart attack or stroke.

The world has come to regard cholesterol as one of the evils of eating fatty food, an opinion based on modern scientific medical experimentation and observations. The arrived at opinion is that eating fat from meat, butter and even vegetable oils is the cause of the raised levels of cholesterol and consequent circulatory and heart problems.

In this excellent investigative documentary,
cardiologists are interviewed to reveal the fraud
of cholesterol-lowering statin drugs, and the
criminal activity that has allowed this class
of drug to become the best-selling class
of drugs of all-time

We must remember that modern medicine is an experimental science that's only a few hundred years old. It has been a process of experimentation that not so long ago involved prescribing mercury and other poisons as treatments. Fortunately, medical science eventually learns from its mistakes but it has no concept is to what life actually is or how to fully support life of the body and mind.

Modern or allopathic medicine only ever treats the symptoms of disease, it is completely unconcerned with the cause of disease and suffering in general. In contrast, there is an entire field of natural medicine that is based around treating the cause of disease and when this is done successfully, the symptoms also depart.

Allopathic medicine has developed excellence in terms of emergency repairs to the body. Bone setting and surgery has become a specialty yet they seem to know very little about human biology, diet or nutrition because this is not really a part of any allopathic medical programs.

Conversely within the field with the field of natural medicine, focus is about what sustains life and it is from thousands of years of observation and learning that we know it is not fat that causes harm, it is the foods that have been bioengineered to have a long shelf life and convenience.

One in four Americans over the age of 45 are now taking a statin drug, despite the fact that there are over 900 studies proving their adverse effects, which run the gamut from muscle problems to diabetes and increased cancer risk.

In other words, it is the combination of sugar and processed foods that is primarily causing the increase in cholesterol levels. But when a high fat diet is included, then the problems are compounded because the metabolism is already damaged and incapable of processing what might be considered as a normal diet.

Modern medicine has a dissective approach in its study of life. In order to understand the function of the liver, it removes the liver from the body and dissects into its smallest components. However it is not possible to know the function and metabolism of any organ by removing it from its environment. The format of analysis is fundamentally flawed.

Statins, which are designed to help protect people from heart failure, can actually increase the risk of a heart attack according to a new study.  Researchers say the drugs, which are taken by around 12 million patients in the UK, are more likely to cause calcium deposits in the arteries, which can lead to a heart attack. Statins were developed to lower cholesterol, but they also block a molecule needed to produce vitamin K, which prevents calcification of the arteries. The author of the report, published in Expert Review of Clinical Pharmacology, says there is ‘no evidence to support people taking statins’, which opponents say also causes other health issues including skeletal weakness and muscle pain.

Cholesterol Drug War

Hence they arrive at drugs which perform certain chemical actions within the body. We know with over-the-counter painkillers, they don't actually stop the pain, they simply interfere with the transmission of those pain signals so that they are not received by the brain.

So the problem of cholesterol and arteriosclerosis has come about through an unhealthy lifestyle, poor diet and nutrition. Statin drugs are an intervention to try and prevent the buildup of cholesterol in the form of arterial plaques, but they do so at a considerable cost because there are many side-effects.

The adverse side effects of Statin use include muscle problems, increased risk of diabetes, increased liver enzymes in the blood due to liver damage, memory loss, cognitive/memory loss, forgetfulness and confusion, neuropathy, pancreatic and hepatic dysfunction, and sexual dysfunction.

Statin drugs attempt to compensate for the problems associated with a poor diet and lifestyle, but some modern research indicates that statin users are not going to live significantly longer than non-statin users and there is no guarantee that statin use will actually prevent arteriosclerosis or other problems associated with an excess of cholesterol.

Doctors prescribing statins will also advise making some sensible changes to diet and lifestyle and if these changes are carried out, then the need for statins may well be negated. Yet if you have listened to the documentary, the debate is about beliefs and not real knowledge.

Common names for statin drugs include atorvastatin (Lipitor), fluvastatin (Lescol, Lescol XL), lovastatin (Mevacor, ltoprev), pravastatin (Pravachol), rosuvastatin (Crestor), simvastatin (Zocor) and pitavastatin (Livalo).
